SWREC Spotlight News Letter-OCtober Edition

Spotlight from our Executive Director: Lessons from the Autumnal Equinox

The autumnal equinox, which occurs each September, is one of nature’s most balanced moments. On this day, the hours of daylight and darkness are nearly equal all around the world. Yet, what follows reveals the fascinating duality of our planet’s hemispheres: while the Northern Hemisphere begins its gradual shift toward shorter days, cooler weather, and the turning of leaves.
This contrast offers an important educational reminder—perspective matters. The same planetary event creates two very different seasonal experiences depending on where one stands. For students, families, and educators, this is an ideal time to reflect on cycles of change, balance, and opportunity. In the classroom, autumn often represents a season of settling in—establishing routines, focusing energy, and setting meaningful goals for the year ahead. Just as trees conserve their energy by letting go of leaves, we, too, can release distractions in order to focus on what truly matters. Change, however, is rarely comfortable. It disrupts our familiar patterns and challenges us to adapt. But within that disruption lies the opportunity for growth. The equinox teaches us that reflection is not optional in times of transition—it is essential. Pausing to notice what is shifting allows us to ask deeper questions: What do I need to let go of? What new habits or perspectives will carry me forward? Where is balance needed in my life and learning? The natural world reminds us that change is the rhythm of life, and reflection is the key to transforming that change into wisdom. Just as the earth tilts and adjusts its relationship to the sun, we, too, are invited to shift, to realign, and to grow. The equinox reminds us that while change is constant, balance is possible. Whether you see falling leaves or blooming flowers outside your window, this season encourages us all to pause, reflect, and step into the next chapter with renewed purpose and openness to growth. I hope that October is the perfect balance of reflection and renewal for all of you. Embrace the change in seasons and in yourself.
