SWREC Spotlight Newsletter- March Edition
Spotlight from our Executive Director
The Luck of the Irish and the Gift of Teaching
In March we often hear the phrase “the luck of the Irish.” While it sounds like a cheerful wish for good fortune, its origins are more complex. The expression gained popularity during the 19th-century gold and silver rushes in America, when many successful miners happened to be Irish or of Irish descent. Some people used the phrase sarcastically, suggesting their success was due to luck rather than skill or perseverance. Over time, however, the meaning softened into the warm, positive sentiment we know today as a wish for good fortune, resilience, and unexpected blessings.
In education, we know that what looks like “luck” is usually the result of dedication, care, and heart. Still, it’s worth pausing to recognize just how fortunate we truly are as educators.
Each day, we are given the rare opportunity to guide, inspire, and influence young people at critical moments in their lives. Few professions allow us to witness growth so directly—from the spark of understanding in a lesson to the long-term impact on a student’s confidence and curiosity. The lives we touch ripple outward into families, communities, and the world beyond our classrooms.
We are also fortunate to be part of a system that values public education as a cornerstone of opportunity and democracy. Public schools open doors for every child, regardless of background, and create spaces where learning, belonging, and possibility can flourish. Being part of this mission connects us to something larger than ourselves, shaping tomorrow through the students we serve today.
So this season, may we remember that while skill, compassion, and commitment drive our work, a little “luck” never hurts. May the Luck of the Irish bring renewed energy, moments of joy, and continued inspiration to all educators across the SWREC region. Thank you for the difference you make every single day. Remember that your work truly shapes the future.
Wishing you a season filled with encouragement, success, and a touch of Irish luck.
Sincerely,
Valerie Brea

We recently took a moment to celebrate the incredible heart of our organization: our staff! The theme of the day was "Thanks for Sticking With Us," featuring a fun cactus motif that reminds us how resilient and supportive our team is. From "sticking up for each other" to "sticking it out even when it's hard," the message was clear—we are better when we stick together.
The celebration was filled with great food and even better company. Staff enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch from Domino's and a beautiful, custom-made cactus cake complete with pink flowers and a "sand" base. One of the highlights was our "Sticker Station," where colleagues picked out inspirational stickers for themselves and shared ones of encouragement with their teammates.
Whether it was the kind messages written on the mirrors or the laughter shared over lunch, the day was a wonderful reminder of why SWREC is such a special place to work. To every member of our team: We appreciate you so much!
